Juarez Machado è un pittore Brasiliano, noto per le sue Figure in Art Déco style. Parte della sua produzione sono anche le Serigrafie che vi presento.

Machado è nato a Joinville il 16 marzo 1941. Pittore, scultore, disegnatore, fumettista, mimo, disegnatore, scrittore, fotografo ed anche attore. Nel 1954 si trasferisce a Curitiba, dove s'iscrive alla Scuola di Musica e Belle Arti di Paraná. Nel 1964 espone la prima volta con una mostra personale presso la Galleria Cocaco, Curitiba, iniziando una carriera di grande successo. Si trasferisce a Rio de Janeiro nel 1966, dove risiede per venti anni. Attraverso i suoi disegni umoristici viene conosciuto a livello nazionale. Oltre a disegnare e dipingere, ha fatto il mimo, lo scenografo, il graphic designer, l'illustratore e lo scultore. Invece come fumettista conquistò la stampa Brasiliana, per poi avere il programma Fantástico, tramesso dalla TV Globo. Alla fine degli anni '70 si dedica unicamente alla pittura. Viene conosciuto così oltre i confini della sua patria, difatti nel 1978 si
reca a New York, Londra ed infine a Parigi dove, nel 1986, si stabilisce ed apre uno proprio studio. Le sue mostre a Rio de Janeiro ed a Joinville comunque rimangono. Nel frattempo riceve numerosi riconoscimenti, sia in Brasile che all'estero. Espone frequentemente negli Stati Uniti ed in Europa.

“I am artist because it is the conduit to release the ideas and visuals I carry daily. Since I was a little boy I have pursued my own exploration rooted in the unconscious mind and nurtured with daily practice using a variety of mediums of artistic expression. My artistic process developed organically from my father's cabinet shop to the stainless steel sculptures I create today.

I am very passionate about my current expression - Flow Series. It is the culmination of my life's work. The overwhelming feeling of purpose and expression started with my design of George's Horse. I wanted to do something new and contemporary, but it wasn't exactly the idea of modernity that led me to this design.

If you've been following my blog for awhile you know I have a thing for Christmas tree ornaments. I love them!  In fact, my personal collection of ornaments numbers well over 500! So for the past four years now, I have created my own version of Christmas angel ornaments. This year I have made a limited collection (meaning not very many. Really. It's a lot of work--labor of love!) of hand-made angels to hang on your tree. Each angel is numbered and signed, on wood. The wings and halos are copper wire and each angel is holding a jingle bell for a touch of holiday whimsy.

A gift bag with ribbon comes with each ornament so all you have to do is decide who will be the lucky recipient!

Each angel measures 5.5 x 6.5" including wings and the halo. Order early--these angels will fly out the door!

Palette Knife Painting

This abstract went through alot of changes before it was completed. When I started it, I was using a totally different color scheme and did not know I was going in this direction. I applied layers and layers of color...there is alot of movement and depth in this abstract. I used both the brush and palette knife on this one. Lines, shapes, color and texture...it is all on this canvas. I really like this size canvas...it hangs well above a dark piece of furnture or tilted up against the wall, sitting on a table or cabinet. This contemporary abstract is on gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. It is ready to hang! Thanks so much for viewing this blog. Jorge Enrique.

Jorge Enrique is a Cuban-born, Miami-based artist who likely has been seen more often outside of Miami than here. Yes, that happens, but he is getting a showing right now at the Waltman Ortega gallery, a series of sculpture paintings, crafted from resin and paint, that have a street-art aesthetic but are meticulously detailed. His “Urban D-Construction” works resemble both barcodes and street grates (the title of this show is “Barcode”), meaning that they look both clean like lines on a barcode, and gritty and messy like a grate below your feet.
But in fact the color and layering of the resin and paint are the real attractions. The bright blue standing sculptures – a duo – are a stand out, check out the craftsmanship on this piece. Some look 3-D, because of the intense layering.

Jerome Lagarrigue.

In the adjoining room is a complete departure, several large, semi-abstract paintings from Jérôme Lagarrigue. Part African-American, part French, the artist now makes his home in Brooklyn (his studio was seriously damaged during Hurricane Sandy). These works that make up “Closer” take on many forms. Up close the oil paintings  – not acrylic – look light and gentle, something that oil does not lend itself to. Also up close they are simply a mesh of deep colors. But from a distance you can discern visages and eyes, as the abstraction starts to fade. And it is the eyes that are the most mesmerizing – Lagarrigue has incorporated reflections in the eyes, almost like they are rear-view mirrors. You can read these paintings any way you want.

While both these exhibits are widely different in their form and visuals, this is a smooth show in its layout and composition; pieces have not been thrown up on the wall, like too often happens in a group show, trying to get along with each other. They co-habit comfortably.

TU Dance’s fall season offers both intellectual heft and vulnerability:

For their eclectic fall season performance at the O’Shaughnessy this weekend, TU Dance (a Knight Arts grantee) offered four very different dance works, including one world premiere, “Feather and Bone,” choreographed by TU Dance Cofounder Uri Sands.
The night started strong with “Amusement of the Gods,” a cerebral, complex work choreographed by Uri Sands which debuted in 2010. By turns angular and fluid, it’s a mélange of modern movement, inspired equally by ballet and African dance, against the backdrop of grand, orchestral melodies. The dancers shift mood like quicksilver, their jutting hips, sharp elbows and heavy footfalls tempered by rolling shoulders and raised arms. It’s a subtle meditation on the human condition – from romantic love and the cumulative gravities of age to the expanses of religious ecstasy.
For the next piece, “Strum” — choreography by Camille Brown and accompanied by strings, notably acoustic guitar by Rodrigo y Gabriela — the dancers’ movements turned liquid, athletic but disciplined, thrumming with restrained exuberance. Then came Sands’s new work, “Feather and Bone.” A lone dancer enters the stage in silence, a tall plume carefully poised upright on an outstretched palm; her movements are painstaking, less sure for this precarious balancing act. As more join her, the silence persists; dancers begin to move in undulating pairs; their breathing and footfalls the only sounds we hear. As the soundtrack shifts from silence to Bon Iver’s haunting vocals, hard-won control gives way to sensuality, to reveling in the play of sinew on bone, intertwined limbs and skin on skin. The piece is delicate, marked by nuance and restraint and disarming in its vulnerability. It is quite different in character from Sands’s other, more muscular work.
The full company of ten dancers come together for the fourth work, rounding out the evening with a rousing rendition of Sands’s 2009 piece “Sense(ability) Sketch III – Earth.” The gestures here are decisive and grand, the movement’s focus firmly planted on the ground beneath the dancers’ percussive feet. The work feels at once celebratory and martial; the dancers move in concert, momentum and sheer kinetic power escalating until the finale, when “snow” rains down on the troupe from above, their feet kicking up bits of white stuff with every step.

I have been reading a book about life and retirement. One of my favorite parts is where the author is comparing life to a stream of water flowing down to the ocean. The water will continue its trek even if you try to divert it or build a dam, eventually it will flow around or over and seek its preset destination.
